Rail fencing creates a clear property boundary while preserving views of your yard, pasture, landscaping, or surrounding tree line. Its open design provides definition without making a large property feel enclosed. Ranch rail is our most popular rail fence style and is available in wood or vinyl. Traditional split rail fencing is available in wood. 

For customers who need a more enclosed barrier, galvanized wire mesh can be added to either wooden style to help contain pets or animals while maintaining the appearance of an open rail fence. Your project specialist can help you select the appropriate style, rail count, height, and mesh based on your property and intended use.

Rail Fence Styles

  • Also known as the Kentucky Ranch Rail, this is our most popular style that features clean horizontal rails that define property boundaries while maintaining an open view. It is available in wood or vinyl with two-, three-, or four-rail configurations.

  • Crossbuck ranch rail fencing combines diagonal rails to create a distinctive X-shaped pattern. This decorative ranch rail style is available in wood or vinyl and works especially well along driveways, entrances, horse enclosures, and open landscapes.

  • Also known as the West Virginia Split Rail, this style of rail fence provides a traditional, rustic appearance that complements large yards, wooded properties, and rural Ohio landscapes. It is available exclusively in wood with two- and three-rail configurations.

  • Galvanized wire mesh can be added to wooden ranch rail or split rail fencing. This upgrade provides additional containment for pets, chickens, and other livestock while preserving the open appearance of the fence.

Rail Fencing FAQ

  • Split rail aka West Virginia Split Rail fences use 2-3 rails and is made from treated Northern Red Pine providing a natural and rustic look. Ranch rail aka Kentucky Ranch Rail uses 2-4 rails and can be made from Poplar wooden rails or vinyl. Both wooden styles are able to be upgraded with a galvanized mesh. Mesh upgrade is NOT available for vinyl rail fences.

  • Wooden ranch rail fencing with galvanized wire mesh can be an excellent option for chickens and other animals. The wood provides a strong, natural-looking framework, while properly selected mesh helps contain animals and deter predators without closing off the surrounding view.

  • Yes, but only to wooden rail fences. For our wooden split & ranch rail fencing there is an upgrade option to add our black vinyl coated, galvanized 2"x4" 14 gauge mesh. The mesh is fastened to the fence with 3/8" staples.

  • Split rail is 10 feet on center and ranch rail is 8 feet on center.

  • New ranch rail and split rail fence installations start at $2,500, with the average Mae Fence project costing approximately $5,500. Final pricing depends on linear footage, height, style, gates, mesh, and any removal of existing fencing.
